Ohio Drivers Ed Practice Exam: Practice Test Prep & Study Guide

The primary responsibility of a driver when approaching an intersection is to yield to pedestrians and vehicles that have the right of way. This principle is crucial for ensuring the safety of all road users, including those on foot and other vehicles that might be crossing or entering the intersection. Yielding means that the driver must give way to others and be prepared to stop, if necessary, to allow them to proceed safely.

Understanding the right of way is essential for navigating intersections, as it helps prevent accidents and promotes smooth traffic flow. Pedestrians waiting to cross have a right to safe passage, and drivers should be alert to their presence. Additionally, vehicles that have a legal right of way, such as those on a main road, should be prioritized, ensuring that all drivers are adhering to traffic laws and common courtesy on the road.

Alternatives like increasing speed often lead to dangerous situations, while simply signaling and proceeding without regard for the right of way can create chaos at intersection. Stopping for all traffic signals is relevant but does not encompass the broader responsibility of ensuring that all road users—especially the most vulnerable like pedestrians—are considered in driving decisions. Thus, yielding is the correct approach.
